Asko Refrigerator E5 Error: Evaporator fan fault
Asko refrigerator E5 error is a common issue reported by Asko appliance owners. What Asko Refrigerator Error Code E5 Means Error code E5 on an Asko refrigerator points to a fault with the evaporator fan motor. This fan sits behind the rear panel of the freezer or refrigerator compartment and is responsible for drawing air […]

Answer to continue safely
Is it safe to keep using?
No. Without the evaporator fan, the refrigerator cannot distribute cold air and food will not be kept at safe temperatures. Do not use until repaired.
Can I reset the code?
No. E5 will return immediately unless the fan obstruction is cleared or the motor is replaced.
When to stop immediately?
Stop if you notice: Refrigerator compartment temperature exceeds 5 °C (41 °F) — perishable food is no longer safe., You can smell burning from inside the cabinet, indicating motor overheating..
Symptoms You May Notice
Refrigerator interior is warm despite compressor running
You can hear the compressor operating and feel cold air at the back panel near the evaporator, but the main compartment does not cool because the fan is not circulating the air.
Unusual squealing or grinding noise from inside the cabinet
A failing fan motor may produce a high-pitched squeal or grinding sound before it stops completely, audible from inside the refrigerator or freezer section.
Uneven temperatures — back of fridge cold, front warm
Cold air pools near the evaporator at the back of the compartment while the front and door area of the fridge is noticeably warmer than the set temperature.
E5 shown on the control panel
The control board detects that the fan motor is not running or not drawing the expected current and displays E5 to alert the user.
Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor
The brushless DC fan motor has burned out or its bearings have seized after years of operation, preventing it from spinning.
DIY PossibleIce blockage jamming the fan blade
Excessive frost build-up around the fan blade can physically prevent it from spinning, causing the motor to stall and the board to log E5.
DIY PossibleFan wiring or connector fault
The connector between the fan motor and control board may have come loose, or a wire in the harness has broken.
DIY PossibleSafe Checks You Can Do
-
1
Check for ice blocking the fan
Unplug the unit and open the freezer section. Remove the back panel (typically 2–4 screws). Look for ice around the fan blade. If present, allow to defrost fully with doors open for 24 hours before restarting.
Use towels to catch melt water and a hair dryer on the low-heat setting to speed up clearing the ice if it is only around the fan area.
Tools required -
2
Spin the fan blade manually
With the unit still unplugged and back panel removed, try to spin the fan blade by hand. It should rotate freely. Stiff or grinding movement indicates seized bearings — the motor needs replacement.
Note the fan model number printed on the motor housing before ordering a replacement.
-
3
Reseat the fan motor connector
Locate the 2- or 3-pin connector on the fan motor and the corresponding socket on the wiring harness. Disconnect and firmly reconnect. Restart the unit and listen for the fan to spin.
Replacement Asko evaporator fan motors cost from $45–$90 and are available from Asko parts dealers.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- The fan blade spins freely but the motor does not run after reconnecting — the motor windings have failed and it needs replacement (from $80 including labour).
- The control board is not sending voltage to the fan — a PCB fault requiring professional diagnosis.
- The fan mounting bracket is broken or the evaporator coil shows signs of a refrigerant leak (oily residue or unusual odour).
