Asko freezer defrost drain notice — read this important safety alert for full details and affected models.
A blocked defrost drain in Asko upright and integrated freezers causes meltwater to pool in the base of the freezer compartment, eventually overflowing onto the floor and creating a slip hazard and potential electrical risk near the compressor. Asko FN-series no-frost freezers run automatic defrost cycles several times per day, and the drain channel can become blocked by food debris or ice bridges if not periodically checked.
Ice accumulation beneath the freezer floor panel — often visible as a solid sheet under the crisper or drawer in the base of the cabinet — is the most common indicator of a blocked defrost drain. Addressing this early prevents the more serious situation of ice dislodging and blocking the drain permanently.
Warning Signs to Look For
- Water pooling inside the freezer compartment floor
- Ice sheet visible under the bottom drawer or below the evaporator cover
- Water dripping from the freezer section into the refrigerator compartment below
- Wet floor under or in front of the appliance with no obvious external source
- Unusual gurgling sounds during defrost cycles
Drain Inspection Steps
- Remove all food from the freezer and place it in a cool bag to preserve it.
- Remove the bottom drawer and panel to access the drain hole at the lowest point of the freezer floor.
- Clear any visible debris from the drain opening using a soft bottle brush or pipe cleaner.
- Pour approximately 50 ml of warm (not boiling) water into the drain to test that it flows freely to the drain pan below.
- If blocked by an ice bridge, use a medical syringe with warm water to slowly melt the blockage — do not use sharp tools that can puncture the evaporator.
- Replace the panel and drawer, reload food, and monitor for recurrence over the next 48 hours.
Contact Information
Asko Consumer Support: 1-800-898-1879 | Drain cleaning and defrost system diagnosis by an Asko-authorized technician starts from $110.
When to Call a Technician
If the drain blocks repeatedly within weeks, the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or drain heater may be faulty. A technician can also verify that the defrost timer or control board is executing the correct number of defrost cycles per day for ambient conditions.
