Asko Oven Self-Clean Safety Notice | High Temp

Asko oven self-clean safety notice — read this important safety alert for full details and affected models.

The Asko oven self-clean cycle reaches temperatures between 450°C and 500°C to incinerate food residue, and using this function without proper preparation creates smoke, fume exposure, and fire hazards that can require emergency intervention. Asko OCS8468A and OP8678A series built-in ovens have a pyrolytic self-clean feature that locks the door automatically during the cycle — understanding the safety requirements before activating it is critical.

Pet birds are particularly vulnerable to fumes released during pyrolytic cleaning; owners must move birds to a well-ventilated area of the home or outside before activating the cycle. Heavy food spills, particularly large amounts of fat or sugar, should be manually wiped before running self-clean to reduce the volume of smoke generated.

Warning Signs to Look For

  • Heavy visible smoke from the oven vent during self-clean — indicates excessive food residue that should have been pre-wiped
  • Smoke detector activation during the cycle
  • Fumes in adjacent rooms reaching uncomfortable levels
  • Oven door latch not engaging or releasing unexpectedly during the cycle

Safe Self-Clean Steps

  1. Remove all oven racks, rack guides, thermometer probes, and any aluminium foil from the oven cavity.
  2. Manually wipe out large food deposits and grease pools with a damp cloth — do not use chemical oven cleaners before a pyrolytic cycle.
  3. Open nearby windows and activate kitchen ventilation to maximum before starting the cycle.
  4. Move pets, especially birds, out of the kitchen before starting.
  5. Do not leave the home during the self-clean cycle; stay nearby to monitor for abnormal smoke levels.
  6. Allow the oven to cool fully (at least 2 hours) before wiping out the white ash residue with a damp cloth.

Contact Information

Asko Consumer Support: 1-800-898-1879 | For oven door latch service or self-clean cycle faults, contact an Asko-authorized technician. Service calls start from $120.

When to Call a Technician

If the oven door latch does not unlock after the cycle completes and the oven has cooled fully, do not force the door. Call an Asko-authorized technician — forcing a locked latch can damage the door hinge assembly or the electronic lock mechanism.
